Green Development Strategies and the Neighborhood Stabilization Program: A View from Columbus, Ohio
In 2008, the city of Columbus took a significant step in their housing policy by making green design central to their $22.8 million, federally funded, Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP). Based on the Green Communities Criteria, the City of Columbus and Franklin County were able to create the AWARE Manual which describes their specific green rehabilitation standards and sample specifications, to hand out to developers, contractors, and other partners. Creating Green and Healthy Affordable Homes for Families at Viking Terrace, Worthington, Minn.
This Green and Healthy Affordable Homes project is one of the nation’s first demonstrations of how rehabilitating low-income housing using green and healthy principles affects the health of residents. The main health-related features of the green and healthy renovation on this Enterprise Green Communities project included ventilation improvements, use of low-volatile organic compound (VOC) building materials, radon testing and mitigation, integrated pest management, Energy Star bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and moisture management measures. Green Asset Management
Green asset management is a powerful tool for improving housing performance. With green asset management, operating costs go down, environmental hazards are reduced, resident utility savings improve, and potential residents are drawn to the attractiveness of a healthy, green living environment.
