Sustainability Training Grants

Green Communities offers Sustainability Training Grants up to $5,000 for affordable housing developers to maximize the health, economic and environmental benefits of green development throughout the project’s life cycle. This grant program provides an opportunity to transfer the design knowledge that informed the Green Communities planning and construction process to the residents, as well as operations and management staff. 

Funding is available to cover the design and distribution of an operations and maintenance manual and the development as well as the implementation of a training curriculum that supports long-term operations and maintenance. 

Overview
Eligible Applicants
  • Open to 501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribally designated housing entities; and for-profit entities participating through joint ventures with qualified organizations.
  • Please note that applications for joint ventures must identify the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization as the legal entity to receive the grant, if awarded funding. 
  • The applicant and the development team must demonstrate their qualifications to successfully carry out the proposed development.

  • Projects must have completed construction at the time of application.

Intended Uses of Funds

Funds may be used to cover the cost of conducting a Green Communities Sustainability Training session including the development and distribution of an operations and maintenance manual per the Green Communities Criteria. Expenses may include: cost of designing o&m manual, cost of printing o&m manual, cost of curriculum development, consultant fee for training; consultant travel costs, not to exceed $1,000; training preparation costs, such as creating invitations, meeting and follow-up materials.

Grant Application and Approval Process
  • Review the Green Communities Sustainability Training Grant Guidelines listed above.
  • Select lead team member or consultant responsible for the development of the training curriculum.  When contracting with a consultant, Enterprise will provide grantee with a sample consultant contract template, if necessary.
  • Submit Green Communities Sustainability Training Grant application by the first week of the month.
  • Receive word by the last week of the month in which the completed application is received by Enterprise that the grant has been approved, declined or approved with conditions. Because funds are limited, Enterprise will reserve the right to negotiate with grant applicants to determine the highest and best use of Green Communities grants in a specific project.
  • Execute a Grant Agreement with Enterprise.
  • Sustainability Training Grant applications are reviewed the first week of each month. Applicants will be notified by the end of that month.

Reporting Sustainability Training Results to Enterprise

Upon requesting disbursement of grant funds, grantees must provide a written narrative report detailing the results of the Sustainability Training, along with the agenda, attendee list, learning objectives and the completed training manuals including the operations and maintenance manual used.
