New York Green Communities

Enterprise has created 4,000 green affordable homes in New York since 2004 and is working to green all affordable housing across the state. We will accomplish this goal by expanding the availability of financial and technical resources, promoting a policy environment that encourages green building, and strengthening capacity for sustainable construction and operation within New York’s affordable housing community.

Enterprise’s Green Commitment in New York
Enterprise is leading the effort to make green and affordable one and the same. Our Green Communities initiative is an integral part of Enterprise’s affordable housing development and preservation efforts in New York City and across New York State. We work with local and state governments and other key stakeholders to develop innovative policies and programs to facilitate green affordable housing on a large scale. We also provide grants, financing, technical assistance and training to our community-based housing development partners to help them build and rehabilitate healthy, energy efficient and environmentally responsible affordable homes.

Today, green retrofitting and rehabilitation of existing affordable housing is particularly important to improve living conditions for residents, reduce the impact on the environment, and ensure the long-term financial stability of New York’s critical affordable homes. Nearly 80% of New York City’s greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the operation of buildings, and 40% of building emissions are caused by residential housing. Poor New York City children are three times more likely to be hospitalized for asthma than their wealthier counterparts. Meanwhile, New York’s affordable housing developers face flat rental incomes, while operating expenses from energy, water and sewer costs continue to rise. Green building is a critical strategy for addressing these economic, health, and environmental issues.
